People use knowledge and patterns they already know to make decisions quickly. Known as heuristics, this process is appealing to the mind for its speed and general accuracy. When Celibidache made his decision, he used his musical perception to discern that this was truly the player the Munich Philharmonic needed. Upon the revelation of the trombononite's identity, however, Celibidache's other heuristics kicked into play. His instincts knew that female trombonists were inferior to male trombonists (I can vouch for the opposition; I know fantastic female trombonists), and he knew he couldn't allow an invasion of his orchestra. In the end, Ms. Conant won the spot. On the other hand, we use logical processes (algorithms) to make decisions and judgments. Through algorithms we will come to a solution every time, albeit a slow process, it will always arrive at a solution.
